Research & Development Institute helps scientists obtain the blood samples they need to develop new diagnostic tests. We have a research laboratory and a large network of physicians that ask their patients if they are willing to donate their blood for research.

General Position Summary

The Phlebotomist and Specimen Processor is responsible for following the phlebotomy, IRB and HIPPA guidelines and processes the specimens accordingly. This position also requires data collection and documentation and preparation of samples for shipment to satisfy sample orders by RDI clients.

Essential Job Functions

  1. All essential phlebotomy duties; including but not limited to wearing Personal Protective Equipment and following accepted and required phlebotomy guidelines.
  2. Read and understand protocol to process collected specimens and store them safely
  3. Basic documentation work include writing down correct date collected,  patient demographic information from the patient such as age, gender, accurate diagnosis information for each specimen
  4. De-label and re-label specimen per procedures and protocol.
  5. Process specimens by ensuring sufficient volume has been collected to meet or exceed specimen fill line criteria.
  6. Ensure the lid is secure on the specimen to prevent leakage in transit
  7. Clearly labeling and sealing the transport media
  8. Prepare shipping documentation and properly pack specimen for shipment including handling cold packs, dry ice and other shipment methods
  9. Take inventory of specimen supplies and order when necessary.
  10. Maintain a high level of accuracy in completing documents and forms.
  11. Follow Good Documentation Practices (GDP)
  12. Provide corrected Missing/Invalid Information data upon request by:
    1. Reviewing data on a regular basis.
    2. Contacting the appropriate resources to obtain assistance with completion of requested information.
    3. Reporting to the appropriate resource any contributing factors to error occurrence.
    4. Contact appropriate resource to address any collection issue such as low sample volume, attempts to tamper with specimen or any other collection issue.

Essential Job Requirements


  1. Certified phlebotomy license required.
  2. High School Degree. College degree preferred;

Experience & Minimum Qualifications

  1. Strong sense of customer service.
  2. Experience entering medical/patient information quickly and accurately.
  3. Must be adaptable and flexible to change with processes, contacts and clinics.
  4. Must be willing to participate in ongoing training and have a desire to continue to improve job performance and knowledge on a daily basis.
  5. Clinic Professional appearance and demeanor.
  6. Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  7. Must be accountable for submitting accurate and complete information.
  8. Must be reliable, punctual, and accountable.
  9. An entry level background in the medical laboratory field.
  10. Can communicate effectively with clients and peers.
  11. Work well under minimal supervision.
  12. Knowledge of computer programs.
  13. Ability to search the internet for applicable information.
  14. Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) and Google Office Suite (Google Docs and Sheets)
  15. Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  16. Ability to keep patient confidentiality as required by HIPPA.

Physical Requirements & Working Environment/Travel

  1. Work in office on computer for long hours
  2. Some local travel to doctor offices in Los Angeles
